For savoury dishes:
2 Tbsp potato starch
1/4 C mashed potato
1/4 C canned pumpkin
2 Tbsp water + 1 Tbsp oil + 2 tsp baking powder
1 Tbsp ground flax seed + 3 Tbsp cold water & let sit for 2–3 minutes
3 Tbsp aquafaba. This is the liquid from a can of chick peas.
For sweet dishes:
1 banana, mashed
1/4 C apple sauce
1/4 C puréed prunes
For 1 egg white add 1 Tbsp plain agar powder dissolved in 1 Tbsp water, whipped, chilled and whipped again
1 Tbsp ground flax seed + 3 Tbsp cold water & let sit for 2-3 minutes

Cheese
Top off your pizzas, burgers and pastas with the growing variety of animal-friendly cheeses. Vegusto, My Life Bio cheese, Sheese, Tofutti and Cheezly are brands of dairy-free cheese imported from overseas. New Zealand’s own Angel Food brand produces melting mozzarella which is even available as an option at Hells Pizza!
Cream
There are some cream replacers such as Alpro, but you could also try whipping up a can of coconut cream. Just be sure to get one without additives and emulsifiers so you can separate out the water. If you like sour cream, Tofutti and Angel Foods make fantastic alternatives.
Butter
There are plenty of dairy-free margarines. Try Olivani or Nuttelex.
Yoghurts
Try COYO coconut yoghurt, Doctors Choice Bio Coconut Yoghurts, Kingland soy yoghurt, Tonzu yoghurt, and Alpro mousse which are available in a range of flavours.
Chocolate
Did you know that Sweet William and Moo Free are also vegan friendly? Many of the Whittaker’s dark chocolate range are vegan friendly, and so are some other brands. Just check the label to make sure they are dairy-free!

Fry's Vegetarian Delights are available in the frozen department at most supermarkets. They offer a tasty range of food like pies, schnitzel, burgers, chicken-free nuggets and sausages.
Bean Supreme is available from most supermarkets in the fridge section. Their range includes tofu, burger patties and sausages in variety of flavours. Watch out for dairy and egg in some products.
Sanitarium produce some canned mock meats like ‘Nutolene’. You can usually find these in the super market. Watch out for egg and dairy in some products.
Linda McCartney meat-free products are found in the frozen department of some supermarkets. The range include pies, sausages, sausage rolls, mince and burgers. Watch out for dairy and egg in some products.
There are also many other brands of meat substitutes. Just make sure you check the labels. You can also try tofu and tempeh, yum!
