Lilys Bunnies – Speckles and Lopsy

Mar 12th 2018 | Submitted by Lily

We recently asked one of our Animal Squad members, Lily, to tell us why she loves animals and why she became vegan.

Why I love animals

I love animals because they are very intelligent, beautiful, cute, amazing, and very loveable creatures. I love all animals, from the huge elephant to the tiny baby cockroach. Some animal lovers don't like cockroaches, and I used to find them slightly scary, but I never hurt them because I knew they were was probably more scared of me than I was of them. Then, when I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, I saw a baby cockroach on the sink. I looked at it very closely and saw it cleaning its face. Have you ever seen a rabbit, rat, or mouse cleaning its face with its hands? Well, if you have you will know just how cute it is and this little cockroach was even cuter! Now I am able to comfortably hold adult and baby cockroaches. At home, I have a white mini lop rabbit called Lopsy and a black and white cat called Ginny. They are the best, cutest, and fluffiest things ever and I love them heeeeeeeaaaaappps!!!!!!

Why I am vegan

I am vegan because I believe that every living thing should get a chance in life to be happy and do what they want. I think we don't need to eat meat and there is no good excuse for eating an animal. Also, animals feel pain. They have feelings just like we do. I wouldn’t want to be hurt or killed just so that someone else could have a meal. I have been vegetarian my whole life and vegan for about two and a bit years. I went vegan when I found out what horrible things happen to the poor calves and chickens and other farmed animals in more detail and started to think more carefully about my actions. I then figured out that by buying products that have dairy in them I am supporting the dairy industry and therefore supporting the slaughter of around 2 million calves every year in New Zealand. That is the main reason I am now vegan. My mum, brother, sister, aunty, uncle, cousin, nana, and grandad are all vegan and my step mum and dad are almost vegan. So I am vegan because I think it is really mean to be mean to animals or to any other living thing. One day I hope that all creatures can feel safe and happy and that humans and animals can live in peace and harmony together. That way we will all be happy.

Great stuff, Lily. Fantastic writing.
